ACT NOW to protest while Quilt in D.C.

On Oct. 6, the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt will be unfolded for the final time in Washington, D.C.

The thousands of panels represent friends and lovers, sons and daughters. The Quilt is a memorial, but the sorrow of AIDS-affected communities is intertwined with anger. ACT NOW (the AIDS Coalition to Network, Organize and Win) will be exercising that anger around the country Oct. 6 to put an end to the Quilt's growth.

At a meeting held in Montreal during the International AIDS Conference,

representatives of AIDS-activist organizations from across the United States declared Oct. 6 a day of national protest. Local groups were urged to engage in highly visible demonstrations and civil disobedience. Already, organizations in cities as diverse as Kansas City, Chicago, Austin and Ann Arbor have announced their intentions to participate, and more cities are signing on every day.

ACT UP/LA will be holding a massive civil disobedience at the Los Angeles Federal Building to press for a speedier

In response to Steffan's discharge, Lambda filed a suit against the Navy,

charging it with unconstitutional discrimination. Lambda recently won the first round of its challenge when Judge Oliver Gasch of the Federal District Court in Washington, D.C. denied the government's motion to dismiss the case. The court has set a schedule for deciding the conditionality of the Navy's regulations. Currently Lambda staff attorney Sandra Lowe, and cooperating attorneys are preparing briefs and affidavits which must be submitted by this fall.

As part of its case against the Navy, Lambda would like to present an af-

Action Now in Orlando will demonstrate for release of DDI and Foscarnet, two drugs that could benefit tens of thousands of PWAS now. OUT will hit the Health and Human Services Headquarters in Washington, D.C. with civil disobedience, demanding implementation of parallel tracks for AIDS drugs. • Lesbians and gay men are serving and have served effectively in the armed forces both as enlisted persons and officers.

• Gay people in the services are accepted, by and large, by their peers and do not pose a threat to security or to the accomplishment of the military mission.

While the actions and demands of groups will be tailored to fit local conditions, it is hoped that AIDS protests occurring around the country simultaneously with the Quilt's last appearance in Washington will awaken the country to the need to deal with the AIDS epidemic.
